Chez Nous.

La Minette Anglaise is actually Janette, a North London girl living in Paris. She moved to Paris two years ago and is still adjusting to life in her new city, but I find her home to have that natural, effortless Parisian way about it. Not fussy, just naturally beautiful and simple.

It's that kind of simplicity I strive for, and then my OCD takes over (the fact that I am striving at all kind of defeats the whole concept, now doesn't it?). But, whenever I visit a European city, I'm very aware of it, and wonder how that graceful look comes so easily. I think we can sometimes overpower our kitchens with the latest things, like toaster ovens and Cuisinarts, instead of filling them with pretty jam jars, geraniums from a neighbors garden, fresh loaves of crusty bread, and big bowls of fresh ingredients from the local farmers market.

It makes me want to have a lovely, slightly disheveled kitchen like Janette's. There's just something so authentic and romantic about it. It makes me want to sit at an old, world-weary kitchen table with a warm latte in my hands, toasty crumbs scattered everywhere and a smile with a bit of ruby red raspberry jam in the corner of my mouth.

Beautiful post. Yes, why is it that a lot of my "stuff" just looks like clutter but here it is so welcoming and attractive!

What a beautiful kitchen! Almost makes you want to be chained to the kitchen sink!

Evocative writing; great post! Thanks for this one. Also wanted to congratulate you for easing out of your day-job to do what you love for a couple of week days. I applaud your courage and wish you all the best. (Hope you find that very special sfboy! I am rooting for you.)

And I agree with the first poster - well put!

Oh I ADORE those Jeu de Paume books she has a stack of. Do you know them Victoria? They have them at the amazing kinokuniya bookstore in Japantown. They will blow your mind with incredible photos and design. I can't read them of course (ther're in Japanese) but it doesn't matter a bit.

Dear Victoria,
Thank you for the most adorable post about my humble little appartment...I'm blushing the same colour as those tomatoes on my kitchen table!

And thank you everyone for your lovely comments!

I'm so glad you all liked the post. It's fun to look into and write about design & culture in different parts of the world. I'd like to give myself an expense account to go and visit in person! ha! i'll put that on the plan for the future.

I'm glad you liked it, too Janette!

Annie - oh yes - I know those books and have a couple. You had to remind me to go and look for more!

All I can say is...(SIGH!) And I do mean a VERY heavy, dreamy sigh.

Victoria, I'd totally join you in the lil' "latte-toast crumb-jam" fantasy! (Maybe with a little Piaf playing in the background with afternoon shopping plans?)

Janette...beautiful home! Thanks for sharing!
