The Darjeeling Limited.

Movies are my big escape...and well, I've kind of needed one. I went to see the The Darjeeling Limited and it was just what the doctor ordered. A little bit of Wes Anderson always takes me somewhere else. The Darjeeling Limited is kind of like Amélie meets Sgt. Pepper. So visually stimulating and beautiful, and a really wild ride with an Anderson-like spiritual quest thrown in. And, of course, some rocking good music. I loved it.

May I object?

I thoroughly enjoy Wes Anderson's movies. (I have 2 copies of Rushmore. No wait, that's 28 Days Later.) They're creative, cosmopolitan, escapist, thoughtful, and often feature quirky tunes. And who doesn't get jolly on quirky tunes?

But isn't he making the same movie over and over again? Movies about wealthy, oblivious oddballs on subdued, yet fantastic journeys to find themselves. Is this really something we must care about, over and over again?

I'm not saying every film out there should be about average schmoes struggling to pay the bills and buy their kids autism drugs, but Wes A's later offerings have come across as detached and reaching. Of course, I know that's part of the point, and I thoroughly admire his ability to convert his insane thoughts into somewhat sane filmmaking, but I just get the sense that for Wes A., quirkiness is becoming routine, and doesn't that defeat the point?

hi mati - so nice to meet you too! and yes, lisa, I will be there!

ET - i have heard that argument and yes, his movies have variations on this same theme. however, i don't remember any of his films being quite this visually stimulating. and, i guess having grown up with some seriously misfit step-brothers and sisters (and very rich, unlike myself) I get a lot of joy from his films. i think there are people out there quite like this and some of them are related to me. so, no matter, the subject matter, he makes me laugh. i have a step brother who for an entire cruise trip refused to speak anything but russian for two weeks. i just enjoy the quirkiness of these characters, i guess.

Well, you gotta admire a guy with the sticktoitiveness (sp?) to not only decide to speak only russian for two weeks, but actually do it. And I would never question a person's motivation for seeing any film. If it gets them away from it all for a couple hours then more power to 'em. I see Wes Anderson's films for the same reason you do. There is joy in Wes.

Cheers! On with the day...

My husband and I definitely plan on seeing this film. We knew it was going to be good from the moment the preview started.

As much as I appreciate the crucial need for down time and/or escapism, and as much as I have loved his movies, this piece really resonated with me and I just can't bring myself to support him anymore:

This is why my most "conscious" friend doesn't really watch movies at all.
