Get The Look!

Since I'm gushing on and on about my big crush, Mad Men, I thought I might take a stab at getting 'the look'! Capture the bygone cinematic era in some wondrous home-office furnishings, so to speak. A lot of us work from home these days, or have flex jobs, or just like having a place to sort it all out, and keep our oh-so-hectic lives somehow organized. So why not have a cool, work-in-the-home kinda space? What's old is new again, as per usual, and finding 1950-60's classic office pieces is easier than ever. Mad Men's a world where smokey, cocktails on the rocks in the workplace are quite as commonplace as electric typewriters, and the secretary's skirts are as tight (aka loaded) as the ad men working their marketing magic. Oh, take a memo, please!

what a great post! i recently have become obsessed with the show as well. at times i have to catch myself and question what is so appealing about constant chain smoking and male chauvinism, but you nailed it...it's just mesmerizing!

i haven't caught the show, but i have always loved the design and fashion of that era-- particularly the early 60s sleek chic over 50s kitsch. the look is one i always associate with the incredibly suave sean connery as james bond, as well as my cocktail loving grandparents.

This is the best post ever! I have like 10 windows to all of the links. Btw, that sofa is available in a very similar style from Macys and another company whose name I cant remember right now. The one from Macys got decent reviews on Apartment Therapy. Okay...back to your links!

OMG, my mom has the penguin cooler! I love the look...early, sleek 1960's before everything went psycho hippy colors! Love the outfits, hair, etc., hate the bad attitude when women were just chattel.

Wonderful post Victoria! You truly captured the essence of the Mad Men ambiance :) Thank you SO much for including my vintage lamp!!

I have this 1950s pamphlet published by Remington on "How to Be a Super Secretary" -- and it is completly indicative of the chauvinism of that time...how secretaries should always be good "housekeepers" for their boss, and absolutely sound beautiful on the phone, even if they are "plain"...ridiculous Mad Men times!

I realized while looking at these that the show has a really subtle difference in the way the home and office are designed... duh, of course, but it's kind of interesting to contrast them. The home is a little less progressive maybe?

Oh, but the color pallette and the lines, and Don and Betty and Joan. Sigh...
