I think the best tips that I have gotten from domino have been regarding two things that I have trouble with: hanging art and arranging furniture...

How to make a bookshelf look good. Adding in things other than books, laying them horizontally, etc. Sounds obvious but before domino I never really thought of it!

I miss getting my monthly Domino in the mail =( Anyway, the best thing I learned from Domino is that it's okay to mix & match styles, colors & prints to achieve beauty, harmony & depth. I've always been safe and thought that matchy-matchy was the way to go when designing a space.
ReplyDeletei have to say each of the comments already posted are things i would have mentioned- but what i am using NOW... moving and starting over decorating completely is to take a picture of EVERYTHING you own... if you LOVE it keep it- if you don't... DON'T!! see how what you have works with your design ideas & add the pieces that you need!

I would say that Domino taught me that it's ok to have fun with decorating - and that's it's alright to combine styles, and go for (sometimes odd) color combinations.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was first getting interested in decorating they showed that California house with the pink sofa that everone coveted. I studied that house for hours trying to figure out how she was able to combine both traditional and modern elements. Domino showed me how to break out and do something different. That's what I miss the most about Domino...sigh.
I think the best rule is - there are no rules. Use what you love and you can't go wrong. And the other thing I loved about Domino was all the color combos they used. Pink and Orange is my favorite.

i would really like to anticipate in this here, but i am from europe and we don't have any domino related magazin here.(which is in germany) there are some magazins but not something like domino whos online version i really liked. i am sorry that one has gone :-(

ReplyDeleteMy favorite decor idea I've gotten from Domino was an issue with a designer's assistant. He'd covered his fridge in wallpaper. In a tiny little kitchen, it popped with color and reminded me that EVERYTHING can be amazing if you look at your materials differently. Even a fridge that isn't a cute Smeg in laquered red...

ReplyDeleteAffordability - is the main thing I picked up initially from Domino. I don't need to live on cheap, ready-to-break in a year furniture as long as I splurge on one important item and then bide my time to pick up treasures from all around.
ReplyDeleteThe second tip that helped me a lot was that organization can be pretty and functional. Before Domino, I didn't know my books (old and new) can look super attractive on a bookshelf with little tweaks of color and texture here and there. Thanks to Domino, now I can often pull together a bookshelf display in 15 minutes.
my favorite tip was how to plant a garden with wonderful illustrations on a 50 x 50 lot. it was awesome!

ReplyDeletethat early issue with a spread on affordable art was the first i picked up, and i was hooked.
Gosh, Domino was always my visual pick me up and inspiration to keep planning (and finishing) projects. The best thing from them? Probably the ease of re-upholstering a chair along with ideas of how to cluster pictures and frames in different ways to break up or make a room flow. Sigh. Miss it. :(

ReplyDeleteI'll always remember Marion McEvoy's column (which I consistently adored) ... especially her bit about hanging pictures of yourself, and it being appropriate (and perhaps even ironic) to do it in ... the bathroom :) My bathroom now has a wall of goofy childhood photos of me, and guests always disappear in there for a *little* longer than normal, and come out completely amused.

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite tips was to get trays to put on the back of my toilet to help organize my small bathroom items. I read that about 6 months ago and recently moved into an apartment with no counter in the bathroom! I found the cutest striped trays and it's all thanks to Domino! ReplyDeleteI think the good people at Domino always showed spaces that encapsulated the personalities of the owners. The advice was always to decide on things you love and use them as focal points, then to build from there, whether it's a central theme around a colour, print, etc. or if it's something you love to collect...The emphasis was always on the personal and the achievable...I MISS DOMINO SO MUCH!
ReplyDeleteI like how they use different styles in rooms. I used to be really rigid about what I liked (not that I've ever actually redone a house) but now I like the look of mixed styles and the warmth it adds compared to having a stark modern interior, which was my other favorite.

ReplyDeleteI loved the tips for renters, since i can't do that much to my place since the landlord lives very close and checks in! For example, changing the doorknobs & putting in nice black rollerblinds - little touches that make a big difference in a rental.

I am having major Domino withdrawal! I can't believe they took it away!
ReplyDeleteDomino taught me not to be afraid of bold color. For the first almost four years we lived in our house, everything was beige. I thought I liked the neutral palette, but the fact is that I was afraid to make color choices and use bold shades. Now I have an office with pops of bright orange and bright blue, a lovely colored bedroom, and am working on a kitchen with some bright green!

Domino quickly became one of my favorite magazines. I actually found out about it last year (no kidding!). I volunteer at my local library and they let me have all the magazines I want for free, so Domino was always one I took home!

Arranging my books by color!
ReplyDeleteI have so many books, and I thought color-coding would make them harder to find but it turned out to not only be easier, but made my little library a surprise design element.
It taught me that white isn't so scary and using too much color can actually be bad sometimes.

Best tip ever for my smallish apartment: contrary to popular wisdom, it's okay to paint or wallpaper the walls of a not-large apartment with dark colors such as midnight blue or smoky gray and then use lucite or white accessories to make the room pop and still look un-small. My place looks so great afterwards - modern, stylish and not tiny. Thank you Domino and we miss you so much!

I remember an issue from a couple of years ago that featured fixing up furniture. I had never truly realized how beautiful a garage sale or thrift store find could become until I saw that article. It was different from any other examples I had seen and just totally clicked. I've been hooked on thrifting for furniture ever since!

There are so many things I've copy catted from Domino (and I'm a home editor at another magazine). My two favorites are all about fabric: 1.) replacing my hideous sliding closet doors with long, fabric curtains (bonus: you can sweep the curtains aside and see THE WHOLE closet). And 2.) mixing seemingly divergent patterns, like a suzani with some Scandinavian modern print and a Moroccan geometric design. I miss them. I really do.

ReplyDeleteFor me...I came across Domino I'd say about almost a few months before they let everyone know (GASP!)they were closing..That was the highlight of my mail checking days...I am in West Texas...and being a single mom..I do not own alot of beautiful things...but...what I did learn is that everything I own can be used in a different way and nothing HAS TO MATCH! It opened my eyes to decor and the few mags that I do have are of course dog-eared and worn...and regretfully I even loaned out two of them! (yes! i do plan on getting those back!)I love how I can go back and flip through and find new inspiration everytime!

The best tip I ever got from Domino is that there doesn't have to be any sort of order or symmetry to hanging pictures - once I saw that and let it go I have been going nuts buying prints from etsy and hanging them - oh yeah, making my husband hang them - plaster sucks - he is probably happy domino is done... :-(

I loved the article about the feng shuei practitioner visiting the lady's house. She explained that couples argue and get frustrated with each other's clutter. Couples become blinded and only see their honey's clutter. Take home point: keep it neat!

i subscribed to domino from the very first issue, and i miss it so much! my favorite tip came from an article about how a few celebrities from the design field displayed their personal photographs. one of them was a small wall, covered with cork, with really artfully arranged photos. it was gorgeous.

I can´t find just one thing - but what I have used the magazine for is getting inspiration for wall decorations, they taught me that a wall doesn´t always have to be white. I have used the magazine both for private ideas and for the stores I work with in my job.

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite things about Domino was the "Destination" section which featured the best in design shopping destinations for different cities. I used this when I travelled to find these secret shopping treasures. I loved seeing what Rita (Konig) would by and then see if I could find it when her apartment was featured.

the best tip I've gotten from Domino is to be bold and true to your design sensibilities. I love that they feature rooms with soul - rooms that function and at the same time inspire. I like the combinations of old and new, neutrals and bold spashes of colour.

This simple advice changed my home and my life. It was the catalyst for the domino effect that soon followed in living simply so we could simply live and breathe together in our home.

I guess this isn't a specific tip, but Domino taught me that just about anything goes in decorating, and you can mix your own found objects with more cookie cutter pieces to create your own look.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many great tips that I learned from Domino - the travel guides were right up my alley and the so were the online art recommendations. MY FAVORITE and most usefult tip was to stack TP in a large, clear cylindrical vase on the bathroom floor. As the owner of Wilma the cockapoo who LOVES to snack on TP, this has been the perfect solution.I've removed all of the wall-mounted TP holders in my house. Guests can still see where it is,but Wilma can't get to it. Brilliant!

Domino taught me that a well-designed bookshelf can easily transform a room (and it's done on the cheap). Here are my favorite tips:
ReplyDelete1. Paint the inside back of your bookshelf a bright color to create a sassy showcase.
2. Weave objects in with books
3. Use a bookshelf as a room divider
4. Experiment with way you display books- stack them, stand them upright, or group them by color.

ReplyDeletethe biggest lesson from domino, i think, is to not mimic everything we see in a magazine (not even domino). to look at the pretty images and pull from them things we love (a way to arrange furniture in a small room from this issue or a piece of art shown in that issue) and that are true to us, but not to copy it 100%. that we need to trust ourselves in making decorating decisions and to put in our houses and apartments and condos only what we love, things that represent us because it's our home. we live and need to be happy there!

ReplyDeleteHanging window panels was VERY helpful to me. When we started hanging them, I got out DOMINO and there the answer was!
ReplyDeleteDomino was the only home mag that I read cover to cover ever since the 1st issue. It was the one that empowered me with that "can do" attitude when it comes to decorating our home. It taught me not to be afraid to mix styles and that yes, any item/piece that you truly love will always work in any room.

ReplyDeleteHonestly, it's virtually impossible to identify "the best tip [I] ever read about in the pages of Domino." If I had to identify one tip, it would be described as freedom. Part of domino's appeal (and why I cherish every copy of every issue that I received via subscription since it's inception) is that it taught me that there are no decorating/renovating rules.
So many interior design/home decorating magazines make the process so intimidating, unrealistic (and, at times, unattainable), but domino always inspired me to find and create my own style.
On a more practical note, the process of identifying the source and price of all items featured in the magazine (on the page where they first appeared) cannot be discounted. It was simple and innovative (no more scouring the resources page found single spaced at the end of the magazine). domino even made an effort to identify where similar items could be purchased - genius!
Finally, the tabs made it easy to highlight articles and inspiration (except for me, since I practically tabbed every page, the tabs became virtually useless.
domino, oh how I miss you (yes, I still sigh when I check my mail each day - hoping it was all just a bad dream).

More than anything else, I think Domino gave us permission to indulge our own eclectic style and let our personality shine through in our decor. And don't forget it was also a shopping mag. I bookmarked tons of great web stores found in the pages of Domino.
ReplyDeleteI only was able to catch the end of the Domino era, but it really got my attention with it's "think outside the box" attitude about mixing STYLES and the nudges to be brave with COLORS. Eclectic mix of mid-century modern with french country and some bohemian, soooo nice.

I love Domino! So sad to see it go. It taught me how to love white walls. I am a renter and cannot paint. Most home magazines see white walls as crying out for color, but Domino featured so many beautiful interiors with clean, bright, beautiful white walls. I finally made peace with the pale!

I saw a beautiful wall covered with those circular things usually used on ceilings above chandeliers. Anyway, they took a bunch of cheap plastic ones and painted them shades of yellow & white and arranged them on a wall. Fun!
