Homage to Herb.

I found these funky little tin bird feeders (at least, that's what I think they are) at the flea market for a buck a piece, and have been wondering what to do with them. So, in keeping in the spirit of a green garden, I got my craft on this weekend and I used them to make these little herb boxes for my kitchen window sill. As some of you may know, I live in deceased SF Chronicle columnist Herb Caen's old apartment, and now I've got my own little Homage to Herb!

There's nothing like using fresh herbs when you're cooking, and now I've got easy access to them right at my kitchen window sill! Here's to you Herb!

::love::

i think those are small animal feeders. at least, we used to use 'em for the bunnies before i realized they shouldn't be given an unlimited supply of pellets and put them on a diet. ;)

first of all, what an incredible thing to live in such a place full of san francisco history. secondly, what a creative and practical homage!

This post made me LOL! I don't think Herb ever grew a thing on that balcony...! I was a devoted reader of his columns in the 60s on my bus ride to work in the financial district. Alas, I found out that a friend did a lot of his research and it lost a little bit of it's charm. Still, he was a San Francisco institution and I love that you live in his old digs...and very stylishly, I might add!

This is lovely, Victoria. I've been wanting to do this myself. Where did you buy your herbs?

Thanks guys!

Gigegy - i get my herbs at Cole Hardware, or the Flower Mart usually.

Stacy - I got that at American Rag like a hundred years ago! But I think Sur La Table carries them, or any gourmet cooking shop.

I did NOT know that you lived in Herb's old apartment!!
His colum was such a part of my life growing up and living in SF as a young adult. As an "ess eff" in exile in Seattle, I treasure my forst edition of "Baghdad by the Bay" and lust after your little balcony garden - mine is just getting started up here in the chilly Northwest!

Yep, those are feeders known as 'hoppers'. We use them for rabbits as it prevents them from sitting in their food bowl and relieving themselves, which of course spoils the alfalfa pellets they are fed. This is a very cool new lease on life for these hoppers. Good job.
