The Color Purple.

I indulged myself with a mani pedi the other day (pink, not purple), which also requires I catch up on mass quantities of magazine reading. So, I picked up a Vanity Fair and could not help but notice a virtual onslaught of purple. Purple and shades of mauves and lavender were the predominant ink in its pages, and not just the fashion - it was all over their typefaces and the advertisements, too. So, I wondered, is purple headed to the household, too? You may have noticed, I have been strangely drawn to pale lavender, and grays lately. Perhaps it's subliminal, feeding into my brain from the pages of fashion magazines and I just hadn't quite noticed yet.

The color wheel defines purple as “any of a group of colors with a hue between that of violet and red” and as a “symbol of royalty or high office.” Historically, the color purple has been associated with royalty and power, so let's take a look at the most regal of colors - purple, and see how we feel about it, shall we?

Clockwise, from left to right: Lola Pillow from Enhabiten, which is even filled with lavender and buckwheat; Sunbloom Fabric from Amy Butler; Lavender Pillow Cover from Green Room; and pretty Pomegranate Ceramic Vase from Whitney Smith.

I noticed a lot of purple in the mags around the beginning of the year, too. I really love deep purple walls ...

Purple is one of my favorite colors! As a child I would beg my parent to drive me past a house painted purple!!! I enjoyed this- it added a smile to my face today.

I love wearing purple, but couldn't live with it on my walls. The lavender and gray shades are beautiful, but would need a lot of light in the room. And I live in Seattle. Too much gray as it is.

I've always hated purple a lot, associating it with the smell of home perms (70's childhood), but of late, it's been drawing me inexorably in. I don't wanna go though!

What a beautiful collection of images! I love purple too -- my childhood home had a purple dining room, and I always felt so calm yet "grown up" sitting in it :)

I have found myself more fond of purple lately. I typically like the rich deep shades of purple but some of the pastel shades can be lovely too. If I did use it in my home I'd probably go with the lighter end of the scale. I've learned that I don't typically live well with intense colors on my walls. (See 10 years ago with a red bedroom and silver trim?!?! Apparently, I had a subliminal wish to occupy a bordello? What was I thinking? Well, I wasn't using my brain anyway!)

always have been a big fan of purple! going to be doing a dirty lilac shade somewhere in my new apartment. it should go nicely with walnut floors and all the chartreuse/lime in the art we own. we will temper it with lots of shades of grey too.

Why wouldn't people want to be surrounded by a ROYAL color?! Most people look good, or surrounded by, purple or lavender.

I wonder what Pantone will release as its color for 2009.

The dog pillow was fun.

I've had a overwhelming need to add some plum color to our home decor for the fall and haven't really seen anything that would work. Those Jonathon Adler pillows will work for sure! Thanks for the purple post.

I'm quickly becoming a purple convert myself. I did a blog on purple too over at harmonyandhome. I love the photos you found! Thank you for the wonderful photos!

Warning - When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple
By Jenny Joseph.

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickles for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Every fall, purple (and all variation of it), becomes the big colour in clothes. It's how I can tell summer clothes are out and drab sad colours are on the way in. Just something I've noticed every year.
