Say It Ain't So...No Domino!!

I just heard the sad, sad news, that Domino Magazine is shutting it's much beloved doors!! I will so miss this wonderful design magazine, and all the inspiration I discovered in Domino's pages. Like so many other folks, the magazine has been hit hard by the recession, and employees were just told at a meeting that Condé Nast is closing the title. Thanks to all the amazing people who worked so hard to put out a great publication, and best wishes to you all. We'll miss you Domino!

How remarkably bazzare, I was just looking for good design magazines just 30 minutes ago and thought Domino would be perfect. Now I read here and on another blog they are done. Sad. What other magazines do you love?

Is it entirely pathetic that I am near to tears?! What is a girl supposed to do without her magazines? There's hardly any left or at least so it seems.

It's very sad...I really feel for al the people who work there. It's so tough for them.

Other magazines that I read are Sunset (West Coast), Elle Decor, Dwell and I tend to buy a ton of the international pubs like Real Living, from Australia, Living Etc. from the UK, Cote Sud...they are thick and full of wonderful photography, but pricey. They are a real treat for me, though.

This makes me so sad. It's like someone just snuffed a light out... every month is going to be a little darker now.

I'm heartbroken. It's so difficult to see how undervalued art and creativity is when times get tough. Ever notice how art programs are the first to go when schools have budget cuts? I know that interior goods are "non-essential" items but to people like me and so many others who feel passionate about good design, they are THE most essential parts of life. I will miss my favorite day out of every month... the day I open my mailbox to find my Domino inside. :(

Wow this is such a loss! Domino, this site, Apartment Therapy--those were my go-tos for home design. And Domino had such an everywoman ethos to it, it made you feel like you could achieve design bliss without necessarily being a "designer." Add my sadness to the pile...

OH NO!!!! I'm still mourning the loss of Cottage Living. If BHG goes under I will literally have no subscriptions left.

Nooooooooooooo! I am devastated! What can we do to keep it going? Anything?

sfgirlbybay said...

Maybe they will keep the website and deco files up if we beg and all write to them! But it's the advertising dollars that keep it alive...sad but true!

This is so depressing! In these tough times, design magazines are a true comfort. I was sad about Cottage Living going but Domino is so unique and artsy this is double the sadness. I would be willing to pay more for the subscription. I am sure many subscribers would pay more, they should have asked us first. Maybe after the recession they will come back, remember that Victoria Magazine did. I'll try to have hope. If there is a petition to sign, please let us know. Thanks!

So, so sad. And Target layoffs today, too. This is getting scary.

I have already been mourning the loss of Domino...it started out as a way for "normal" people (ie, not rich) to decorate. It seemed to gotten very, very high-end lately.

I hope they don't dare try to send me Lucky magazine...like I can afford a purse that costs more than I pay for rent!

I read that the website is shutting down too. How can we archive all of that goodness before it goes away? Somebody with some technical expertise come up with something please!

Damn! Domino and Elle Decor are my interior design porn mags. I just swoon at the flip of every page and I JUST renewed my subscription to Domino. First Living Room, now this. Boooooo!

Can they still keep the website up and running for us to browse through everything? *sniff* :-(

Very sad day!

A writer above has a great point -- I would have been willing to pay 3x the price of the mag to keep getting it. It's worth more than $1 an issue!

Everyone I know loves this magazine. It seems like an odd magazine for CN to shutter. I think we should all do something and demand it not close.

AAARRRGGG!

We will miss you Domino. I also miss Blueprint the Martha Stewart version of Domino. Hmmm, what will fill the void?

bummerrrrrrrr!!! i love that mag!!
is this where we're headed for the next couple of years? who's next?? real simple...country living...martha stewart living?????

AH. Lucky is my replacement? Please. No.

How sad for all those employees and contributors! And how sad that I gave gift subscriptions to two friends this year as well as renewing my own.

You can all write letters - to Chuck Townsend, the CEO of Condé Nast Publications or Deborah Needleman, Editor in Chief - or comment on the Domno's blog. Protest never hurts!

i feel as though i've been left by a lover...in the middle of the night, without warning or putting up a fight.

Aw, man. It's such an amazingly inspirational magazine. I'm pretty sure I'm in shock right now because I don't believe it.

Dammit! I love Domino and was just about to re-subscribe after letting it lapse. Although, as a voice from the sprawling suburbs -- let me note that this was not a popular or even KNOWN title around here. I know plenty of folks who'd never heard of it.

So perhaps for the design-loving niche it was a must-have, but I think for more "middle America," it was too quirky and youth-skewed.

:(

I was just getting ready to re-subscribe. My subscrip. ends in March. Was the BEST gift I ever received, 2 1/2 yr subscrip. I agree, made my day everytime I got a new issue in the mail. PS - never received the Nov. 08 issue..so bummed about that! Very sad day indeed!!!

Horrible news. Not only a great magazine out of print, but people laid off. We can't afford more people out of work!! I just started a sub!!

domino is my very favorite!

hey victoria, do you think it would be kosher to start pooling readers' domino scans on flickr? i posted some of a jan. '08 article on my photostream for a friend once (with attribution to the magazine!), but i know i'd love to see what other people have saved or scanned. let's keep it alive in some way!

such a great magazine -- such talented staff! they will be missed.

Anna said...

oh, just saw your link to write to the CN folks -- off to write now.

let's see what we can do to keep them going!

sfgirlbybay said...

pippin - you are quite right! i hate that these people are out of jobs!

anna - yes, i think it's okay, as long as when you use them you attribute them back to domino, and/or the photographer (but this info isn't always available for editorial shots). there's a whole domino group on flickr, too. and the deco files on domino's website to capture images from. perhaps create your own 'journal of images'. i'm not sure if flickr likes this idea, or not...but you could save them to your desktop, or a blogspot page.

I can't believe it. At least go online first!

AHHHHHH!!!!
Canadian House & Home is all that is left!!!

I'm not sure if it would help to write Deborah, from what I've read online it sounds like she is leaving the company completely.

I'm very sad about the magazine folding and hope they at least keep the website live.

I'm eager to see where Sara Ruffin Costello lands. I've followed her through several magazines and I love what she does.

I can not believe this I am so sad, every month I got excited when I received my new issue. This is truly a sad day. I wish all the staff much luck and hopefully they can continue the website. xoxo

I am so sad I had my 05' and 06' issues stash in a box and but them in the trash two days ago. I feel like going back and getting them.

Geez, I just subscribed too. It's the by far the best mag out there. sad...

my heart just broke into a thousand pieces. this was my favorite mag. poor home depot expo too...yikes.

everybody pray for our the leaders of our nation and each other.

Toni said...

That is sad. I didn't buy it every time, but I did more than four times a year. I recommend an alternative, it's not a design mag, but a beautiful read/look: La Vie Claire! Yummy!

any word on what our replacement will be. i gave it to all my sisters for christmas.

home companion just extended my martha stewart living script. which will be going forever. country home is done. bluelines blamed domino. who is next.

sfgirlbybay said...

beth - it will most likely be Lucky from what i've heard.

PixelSicle said...

How could Lucky (BORING!) survive and not Domino, this doesn't make any sense. I think we should all write Conde Nast and keep this thing going! I would consider Domino a bargain at twice the usual subscription rate of $10.

i feel like this is a bad dream, and yet i keep wondering if i'm completely out of touch with reality to be so upset about this.

ps, I love your blog, have for a while now, it's my morning ritual
