Very Old Ominvores.

I was listening to NPR's Good Food on a recent Saturday morning, and they reported on a San Francisco based book shop specializing in vintage cookbooks, Omnivore Books on Food. If you never listen to Good Food, give it a try (you can listen to podcasts here) - I always learn something interesting about preparing and where to find new, unusual, and ethnic foods, as well as new recipes, restaurants, websites and gourmet shops. This broadcast was no different, and I learned about Omnivore Books, here in my own hometown, which I'd never even heard of before.

I love vintage book jackets, and try to pick up well designed ones I see at the flea market all the time. I learned from the Good Food broadcast that apparently owner Celia Sack of Omnivore Books specializes in carrying antiquarian, vintage cookbooks her San Francisco shop. While the store is full of books, new and old, it also hosts numerous events featuring chefs and authors talking about their passions, which you can hear about by signing up for their e-newsletter, and plan a visit the next time you're in the city. All books can also be ordered by calling the store (415.282.4712) between the hours of 11am and 6pm, Tues-Sat. They are happy to ship your purchase anywhere in the world.

This darling little bookshop is right around the corner from my house - I bought a few Xmas presents there...she just opened a couple of months ago. (And she's also co-owner of the Noe Valley Pet Company right next door. So dogs are of course welcome in the bookshop!)
