Wallpaper Projects: Book Giveaway!

I recently had the distinct pleasure of traveling to Savannah with Derek Fagerstrom and Lauren Smith of The Curiosity Shoppe and creative DIY crafting fame. It was a wonderfully fun trip, and spending time with the two, I realized that they look at the world just a little differently - everything they see can ultimately be re-purposed as a potential craft project. Even a discarded coffee cup became a vessel for a bouquet of pretty flowers on our vanity.

The duo's latest book, published by Chronicle, is a perfect example of their inspiring way of thinking - Wallpaper Projects is full of over 50 different craft projects utilizing wallpaper scraps in ways I'd never dreamed of. Wallpaper...it's not just for walls anymore! From projects for your home like lampshades and a modern cuckoo clock, to window shades and TV trays, and on to stylish accessories like wallet and checkbook covers to playful pinwheels, Lauren & Derek have done all the brainstorming for you. Each of the Wallpaper Projects include a list of materials and tools needed, complete with simple, easy to understand 'How To' steps. Even the inside of the book jacket is a pretty wallpaper print, designed by textile designer Lena Corwin, and when slipped off becomes one of many potential Wallpaper Projects.

And now, Chronicle Books is generously offering two lucky sfgirlbybay readers a chance to win one of two copies of Wallpaper Projects! Simply comment briefly below, giving us your DIY idea using wallpaper in a craft project and we'll pick two winners! Please enter by Friday, May 15th at midnight, and I'll announce a winners the week of May 18th. Be sure to include a way to contact you, either your email, or webpage/blog! For more about Wallpaper Projects and how to order, click here, and follow more of Lauren & Derek's crafty antics on their blog, Smarts & Crafts.

What a great book and giveaway!

I would wallpaper my bulletin board and my shelf in my closet.

Thank you!

I have been dying to get my hands on this book.

I am excited/ scared to try wallpapering. I thought I would start with a small project, like lining the shelves of my bathroom closet. This book would be the inspiration that I need to take the plunge!

I love wallpaper but we rent so I can't cover my walls in it. So lately I've been buying discontinued rolls and covering my notebooks and textbooks for university. They look so much prettier!

I've got a couple rolls of vintage wall paper waiting for a good use. This book sounds like it would be perfect for that. I've always liked the idea of wallpapering the inside of cabinets and installing glass doors so that the paper can be seen.

I love making greeting cards out of vintage wallpapers - each of them is unique, and extra special because they're handmade....

Krissy (Shimmer Like Gold) said...

That book looks marvelous! I'll definitely have to scout it out. :)

Since I rent and move around a lot, wallpapering walls isn't really an option for me. But to get that same effect, I bought three small rolls of discount rack wallpaper (on the cheap is key for a student like myself), attached an office clip to the top corner of each, and hung them off of nails. So now I have three hanging strips of wallpaper over my bed (think like a wall scroll) that are my headboard. Cheap, simple, and easy to bring with me wherever I go. :D

As you can see, I desperately need this book to help me get this out of my system!

* a mat to place in front of the kitchen sink
* a stylish room divider made of old doors swathed in wallpaper
* cover recycled jars or cans to use as storage tins or flower vases

I love the idea of decorating with wallpaper! If I had oodles and oodles of fun paper, I would wallpaper the ceiling of my closets and powder room *and then paint the walls a funky, fun color". I also love the idea of framing cool wallpaper or using a background for photos or artwork in a frame!

I don't know, that's why I need the book!!

No, actually I've been thinking about doing a wall in my closet, and the back of 2 built-in cabinets I have. I'm thinking seeing all their projects might push me into action!

This book looks lovely - and the photos are totally inspirational! I've been wanting to make a kids' memory game with photos on one side and wallpaper on the back....I think it would be a really nifty gift for my clients! :-)

I would love to wallpaper the inside of everything with in my house and use wallpaper to create bookplates for my books.

Anonymous said...

It depends on how much paper I had. If I had a small amount, I'd use it to make custom mats for a bunch of artwork. With a few rolls, I'd paper foamcore and put it in the backs of my 15' wall of Ikea Billy bookcases in the dining room. They recently changed the backing material and now there are visible seams if you don't have each shelf completely filled. That Ferm feather wallpaper is actually what I've wanted to use for that particular project!

Mary Casper said...

Yes Please!

I think wallpaper makes a perfect summer table covering, as a runner or placemats, because it's so easy to clean up and more interesting than a plain old table.

Craftwise, the possibilities are pretty endless...bookmarks...postcards...the mind reels.

there are quite a few things i'd love to do with wallpaper, but i'll limit it to these three:

1. the top of my coffee table (i'd seal it of course :] )
2. the inside of my linen cabinet, china cabinet and closets.
3. i actually thought of the lampshade idea, but the book already has that in it!

- Wallpaper the top of the plain white tv-furniture-thingy

We've just gone crazy with wallpapers in our apartment and did the hallway and two different walls in the living room. Love the result!

so many things you can do with extra wallpaper! depending on how large a piece of wallpaper that you have, you can:

• cut piece to fit tabletop + cover with glass to protect it + cover bad/ugly/damaged tabletop, desk, night stand, side table... i've done this!

also
• attach to plain "roller" shade + jazz up a window
and
• use it as a mat for a photograph
• cover books to protect them + make them pretty
• make journal covers
• cover tins + jars to organize or hold flowers
• cover cigar boxes for pretty storage
• use in collage artwork
• line shelves + cupboards
and so much more...

thanks for the opportunity! the book looks great!

My apartment is too small for a coffee table, so my boyfriend and I were planning on buying two square ottomans that we could use for footrests, storage, and tables. So we're going to get trays to put on top of them and I've been thinking of covering them with wallpaper. I was thinking of doing the trays in one pattern and then getting some coasters and covering them in another pattern.

Hi Victoria!

I have an old file cabinet that I'm dying to cover with this Cole & Son wallpaper that I scored on eBay. I'll send photos when I do! I'm also going to remove the hardware, and add some cute vintage pulls. Filing cabinets are so ugly! I'm gonna doll mine up!

That said my other wallpaper project is to make some ornaments for my Christmas tree this year. I have this old flocked wallpaper that I will never hang but will look great adorning my tree.

I've seen Derek and Lauren's book at Urban Mercantile, and it's amazing. It would be put to good use in my house! :)

I have an open-plan space, so everything is visible, all the time. Including my office and ugly black bookkeeping folders. It would be great to cover them all in lovely wallpapers. In fact I could cover some other office elements in coordinated colors/patterns as well. That would completely transform the space. Great exercise... I'm inspired!

I recently framed a black and white print floating against linen backing board, I bet a bright, small-print wallpaper would make a great backing for a floating print.

I also really like my planner: for some reason I searched high and low for an attractive filofax before it occurred to make my own with cardboard and binder rings. I've covered the cardboard covers with something different every year, but never wallpaper.

Scraps of wallpaper make excellent labels for my homemade jams. The paper is much more sturdy than any labels I can find, and more fun. Ink the label (with a fine marker, or medium tip ballpoint), and cut it out. Use a touch of rubber cement to affix it to the jar.

You could use fun shears for the edges, but I like to do a straight edge and let the paper's design shine.

i live in an apartment and my bedroom is a tiny, tiny room with only one wall free of doors. one wall has the entrance as well as a very large breaker box, one has sliding glass patio doors and a door to my stackable washer/dryer and the other obstructed wall is fitted with sliding mirror doors leading to my closet.

i couldn't do much about most of these obstructions, but i could at least get rid of the gold rimmed mirror eye sore, by covering the doors with a roll of wallpaper that i found at a thrift store.
