The New New Thing?
Guest post by: Anh-Minh
I wrote about this briefly on my own blog, but I’d love to get some feedback from sfgirlbybay readers on this subject ...
One of the new products in Jonathan Adler’s online shop is this adorable yet also functional (so you can rationalize buying it!) turtle box:
So what do YOU think? Are turtles the next “It Animal” in design following all of the birds, owls and deer(heads) that we've been seeing in stores and magazines? Anthropologie is currently selling these pretty koi plates, so maybe fish will be the new trend? Hmmm ...
Oh, and here's yet another reason to bring a turtle into your home: In some Asian cultures, turtles and tortoises are considered good luck charms. And they represent longevity, since they are known to live a looong time.

i was just thinking about the next "in animal" last night, and i thought of both turtles and hedgehogs. i think either of them have great potential. i really love this new piece from jonathan adler!
my money is on bears + horses. i'm hoping it's bears though....so cuddly ;)

Oh hedgehogs - cute!
Turtles- what's not to like? They were a lot of our very first pets, like Myrtle the Unafraid Turtle, my brother and I found in the woods and kept in the baby pool for a week :)
Z Gallerie has some really odd turtle stuff that I'm not crazy about, like shells on sticks, but these ceramic ones are very cute!

i once road a giant turtle around the san diego petting zoo (back when that was still p.c.).
what about dogs? where are the dogs? :)
thanks for this post, Ahn-Minh! :)
erin & becky: have you seen the adorable hedgehog fabrics at superbuzzy.com? japanese textiles are so fantastic.
grace: my grad school mascot was a bear, so i wouldn't mind seeing it get some design love! (my undergrad mascot was a banana slug -- which i'm pretty sure will NOT be the next trend.)
victoria: foo dogs were mentioned a few weeks back by jon at happymundane. i love his yellow pair, which he uses as bookends.
I've been incorporating turtles into my home decor for several years - especially garden things. I see them as a reminder to "slow down" and enjoy things in the hustle & bustle of life. It would be great to see more possible things to include in my decor; however, just because it's a turtle doesn't mean that I would automatically pick it up. :)
I'm just glad the owl thing is over. Eek.
I was in Paris a few weeks ago and visited a Brocante which was really a Car Boot Fair but had some fascinating stuff. On a table sat two turtle shells (empty of course) they were massive and I just wonder who bought them. Maybe for a garden???
i vote for the capybara. really, this animal gets no love at all. someone turn it into a plushie or a ceramic figurine quick! ;P
cute post a-m.
