Dresser DIY.

I've been wanting to paint this dresser for like ever now, but was torn about the color...white? Charcoal grey? Black? Something to compliment the old grey tile. But then a hint from my friend Leigh inspired me to paint it 'succulent green'. She basically suggested I paint it the color of the soft undercoating of one of the prehistoric looking succulent plants I have growing in my loo. Ahhh, at last the answer to my color conundrum! So I went to my favorite hardware store (in this case, should you be in San Francisco, Brownies is the end-all hardware shop for me!) and hunted down the perfect succulent green/grey I needed. Not your typical G.I. Jane green - oh no. A lovely foggy morning kind of hue called Shady Cove. So, here she is in all her grey glory. And I'm quite happy with it, which is a rare occurrence in my paint it-DIY world!

Great choice of color. I've been obsessed with green-greys and succulents lately, so I can relate. ;-)

I love painted furniture, and your bathroom looks very lovely, very European vintage.

Great color!! I love the mirror on top of the dresser (the panels, with the rounded tops)! Where did you find such a pretty row of mirrors?

Hi. Pretty! What company makes the color?

Ugh...I can barely stand how great it all looks, V! What is it with the greys lately? I'm seriously loving them and I live in a pretty grey place. You nailed it on the color...perfection! Sigh.

thanks guys!!

anon - i get the paint mixed at the hardware stoe and it's just Ace Hardware's 'generic' brand of semi-gloss. i'll take a peak when i get home and see if there's more info.

beefy - i know - lots of greys. when i was in amsterdam i picked up a great design magazine and it ws filled with grey rooms. that was my other inspiration for this color. it's nice to soak in the big tub in such a peaceful environment.

Nice!

I've been wanting to paint a few pieces of mine, but, considering my utter lack of any DIY experience whatsoever, I'm too scared to do antyhing. How did you go about painting it? Do the drawers stick (because of the glossy paint)?

Love your blog!

I liked the wood as well, but the paint just looks so fresh and relaxing. Way to be brave! It turned out great!

Thanks again everyone!

That mirror is original from Pottery Barn, but it is about 5 years old. It is a unique mirror that I love. Thanks!

You are inspired by grey too I see from your recent trip to Amsterdam. It's all I saw over there for 2 months so I came back and changed by header - and you changed your dresser - yeah to us!!!

Guess what I found out?! I plugged "Shady Cove" and Paint into Google and this link came up. It seems that the color you chose, Ace Hardware's Shady Cove is thought to be the same color as the original Star Trek Enterprise. Someone actually collected paint swatches and compared. They described the color as "a light grey color with a light tint of green." You can see the swatch halfway down the page.

Wow, more useless information for me to have in my head. Whoopee!

It's Ace Hardware color 193-D Shady Cove.

It has become so beautiful! Sometimes it can be really hard to find the right color. I'm always attached to bold colors, so sometimes I forget the great effect you can have with a more subtle, less striking color. This one is a great example, thanks!
