Ah, The Ever Faithful Yule Log.

The truth is, I don't really care for Christmas all that much. Sorry, I know...bah humbug. Too much selling, not enough giving. Christmas is not really marketed to those of us on our own, now is it? However, I do my best to decorate for the season. I have a cute tree. It's a silver, retro aluminum one I pull out each year, straighten the crooked wiry branches and add my funny little ornaments. I put on some jazzy holiday tunes and light a fire each night. It's nice to have a fire. But, should you be sans fireplace, leave it to Urban Oufitters to carry this ultra, retro cool Yule Log DVD. The 90-minute DVD provides a roaring crackling fire accompanied by such classic carols as Deck the Halls, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and many more. Ah, those Christmas marketers...what will they dream up next?

I feel the same way about christmas for me I think it has something to do with the fact that I have worked in retail and I am involved in products that the "magic" of christmas is lost. I try to look for it in other ways though, like what a "gift" means to someone that doesn't normally get one, the act of random kindness that people seem so much open to around christmas time. Look for the magic it's there...
Ps: gotta love that fireplace DVD

What are you doing for xmas Victoria ? I am going home to Sanremo,in Liguria, its near the 5 Terre in Italy and Lugano in Switzerland...my mum moved there 4 years ago... I like Christmas just because i get 10days holiday and i get to see my family..although its always a big drama deciding who to spend it with, my parents are divorced so whatever decision i ll take i ll disappoint someone ..ah well... what ya gonna do :)

I'm with you - have a child and I really need to force myself to get into the Christmas spirit. LOVE the yule log DVD. My husband and I usually put on Channel 20 (in the bay area) for our yule log experience and wait patiently for the arm to reach in and put on another log! hang in there - it will be january before you know it :->

i like christmas when i'm home with my family, but all the buy-buy-buy pressurized lead-up to it is quite obnoxious. interesting coincidence that you mentioned the marketing arm of christmas and who it's geared to: clearly not the singles ~ some friends of mine were just having this conversation yesterday. i do wonder how the marketing gods decide to focus on couples & families only? i suppose they're considered to be "expected to buy gifts" and therefore potentially more persuaded by all the commercialism. or maybe there's something else to it?

That's amazing. I'm speechless. Urban Outfitters gets me everytime.

I feel the same way being an "on my own-er" too. I have yet to muster up enough holiday cheer to get the tree out and lights up on the house.

And what you said about not enough giving, I second that. I keep thinking I would enjoy it more if I had my own special traditions each year... I think I have an idea now...I should find a special volunteer project to work on during the holidays. Funny how inspiration strikes...that's why I keep coming back every day!

I love Christmas in the traditional sense but I agree that it is too commercialized...after working in retail as well for way too long, between the traffic and the strollers leave me alone.. I panick and crawl into a corner to seek shelter! I do LOVE to decorate though so I am torn..This year though my roommate who doesn't love to do anything sd do what you want so thank you target I found 3~ 2$ silver xmas trees for my mantel to bring me out of my rut! Maybe that's all we really need target and dollar finds! and pink champagne!

I share your feelings about this holiday - you don't hear people express that very often, so it was refreshing to read it on your blog! I just like celebrating the winter season...big sweaters, baking, candles, rain and the heater clicking on...

Bahahaha!

I suppose I should be more cynical about the marketing, but I just think it's awesome.

thanks for being honest about how you feel about Christmas. I feel exactly the same way and every year I feel guilty about it. I wish we could all give a little more simply ...
