In The Library: In The City.

I recently got this great new book, The Way We Live In The City, and wanted share a glimpse of what city living can be like, for maybe some of those of you who aren't city dwellers. Living in a city brings on its challenges - parking, space, proximity to maybe those you don't wish to have such close proximity to. But I revel in its splendors - walking wherever I need to, corner markets, the neighborhood-ness, culture and shops and cafes of all kinds at your fingertips. I love city living. And this book, In The City celebrates that lifestyle.

I enjoy the challenge of the small space conundrum and relish designing ways of making it all fit within intimate city dwellings. This book offers some inventive and inspiring solutions on just how to make your belongings, well, belong in the tiny spaces apartment living allows. You take advantage of every nook and cranny, and it's considered perfectly normal to have your office sitting smack in the middle of your living room, and it's not unusual for your bed to just fit, and not much else.

Our kitchens are exposed, sometimes very exposed. I had friends who used to call their kitchen 'the betchen' because their bed was in their kitchen's dining nook! You gotta work every bit of space to its best advantage, and having your dishes on display can look great - mix and match or go for a clean, stark white.

Every wall becomes a gallery, or family album full of kids' drawings and art projects. Every shelf a place for books and memorabilia. I guess when you're a city dweller, all things are just a bit more shared, and more exposed, it's all out there in the open. But I wouldn't have it any other way. City Living is the life for me.

What a fun book! Wish it had been around when I lived in a tiny apartment in NYC!

lola - yes - i believe they are of the same series of books.

simplygrove - i looked it up in the book and it says screenprinted, so i think it was done on fabric and affixed to the walls.

I just spent my Saturday on the couch looking through this book, and my usually uninterested husband even leaned over my shoulder a few times and said "Oooh, look at that..." great book!

This is really helpful and sooo inspiring. I really must post pictures of my old apartment in London. So tiny, but you learn to make it prettier.

Wonderful book -I just ordered it from Amazon!!

I like the idea that it isn't embrassed at (and it revels in) showing small spaces and how inventive people are in coping with them (stylishly).

My friends from outside of DC are always horrified that I went from 2600 sq feet to 400 but I love my tiny place.

Wow - I must order this book. Thanks for posting it.

I feel like you actually learn to use the space that you have much more efficiently when there is less of it. My current apartment is slightly smaller than my previous one (tiny by suburban standards, but quite comfortable), and in the process of adjusting to the tighter quarters I learned a lesson about what I really need out of a home, and what is just fluff.

I'm in love with the fourth photo -- of all the pictures lined up on the shallow shelves. I may have to implement that in my place.

I've owned this book for a while and every time I pick it up I catch something new, for instance: did you know the cover photo is a San Francisco apartment? I also love "How We Live, By The Sea". They look great together on a bookshelf...

I live in West Texas, so I am especially envious (I love San Fran! by the way) of you urban dwellers!
I love the picture of the two rows of art/pictures the length of the bedroom wall. But framing so many pictures get a little pricey. I wonder how it would look without all of the frames?
Anyways, I enjoy your blog and thanks for all of the pix in this book.

I'll have to check this out. I have another you might be interested in. It is titled "City Living" creative design ideas for the new urban home by Sharne Algotsson.

well...i live in the city...or i should sayt a big town. there are so many advantages (in 20' minutes by bike i am in the office, everything is just around the corner...) and so many problems (traffic, noise 24H, pollution...) but actually NOW i prefer staying inside the city.
I also have a small apartment...and I have to learn How to "gotta work every bit of space to its best advantage". Sometimes it looks great and cozy as You displayed...sometimes it is only a big mess!
Anyway, GREAT post, thank You.

I miss city living. San Francisco makes it so easy to love the city. What I wouldn't give for the bus to stop outside my apartment 13 times a day. Sigh....

So happy to have come across this book via your blog :)

I live right in the heart of Montreal and lucky to have snag a spacious place but the rooms are so long more then wide I sometimes don't know what to do especially my sons room is angled so oddly. Love this book it really helped me with some ideas I could try out.
But I love living in the city and always have from L.A, Chicago, N.Y, Taipei and now Montreal.
