Flickr Curator: Sacred Lotus.

This wonderful Flickr Curator set comes from one of my very favorite flickr photographers, Nicolle Null, other known as Sacred Lotus, from Portland, Oregon. I have long admired Nicolle's beautiful photos, and have just discovered she also runs the lovely blog Sacred Lotus Photography. She has a great eye for putting together a beautifully composed set of flickr faves, and I think you'll see what I mean when you take a look at these lovelies.

Flickr Curator: Matte Stephens.

We've got a wonderfully talented Flickr Curator today! This happy collection of flickr favorites is curated by the one and only, very talented illustrator Matte Stephens. You've probably seen Matte's own wonderful, retro, mid-century modern looking illustrations around the web (or right here on the blog) and in his etsy shop, but here's a peek at what makes Matte smile. This set also makes us aware that flickr is not just about photography, but contains an amazing bounty of amazing illustration work, as well.

Matte told me this about his collection of flickr favorites: "Flickr is so fun, I have found tons of neat stuff and new friends. Vivienne my wife, and best friend's paintings are some of my favorites. She has such a great sense of humor. I usually mark things favorites that make me laugh."

Flickr Curator: Mrs. French.

I'm very excited about today's Flickr Curator, Traci French, aka Mrs. French of flickr fame. Traci runs the beautiful blog, Bliss, and is an amazing photographer - I want to shoot like Traci when I grow up. She also shares her lovely work with the world, in her etsy shop, Blissful Images, where you can purchase her gorgeous, delicate images. I just knew her curated set of flickr faves would have me oohing and awing. It took me a long time to get through it, without wanting to favorite each and every inspiring image.

Here's what Traci shared about about her flickr faves: "I think, to me, my 'favorites' represent a world I would like to live in. My real life world is often chaotic, cluttered and/or a work in progress. My photography and the photography of others allow me to create the world I see myself in, the one I create in my head: fresh, soft, simple and lovely...taking in the everyday, and finding the beautiful in the mundane. One day I hope to create this type of environment all around myself and my family; until then I have photographs."

This week's flickr curator set comes from Jan of Poppytalk, one of my all time favorite blogs, and Poppytalk Handmade - curating the best of etsy. As I think I've said it, like a million times, but Jan has a great eye, and curates the best of the best of handmade goodness, so it's no surprise she has a great eye for selecting a great set of flickr faves.

Here's what Jan has to say about her flickr faves: "I've been really, really picky with my favorites and so some of them are really old - but I pick them only if I absolutely love them and will never not love them (basically), and that I love the way they all work together and strangely enough have some sort of connection to each other. It's sort of like the furniture in your house. If you really love it, even though it may be from a different period or style than other pieces you love, they all somehow work together."

Flickr Curator: The 10 Cent Designer.

I've begun a new regular post, and this is the very first installment. Each week I will post a collection of flickr favorites, as curated by one of the many excellent flickr photographers of their own personal flickr favorites. I've asked for a quote from them on why they think they've chosen these selections of favorites at any given point in their lives. I've noticed when I look back at my own flickr favorites, there seems to be a bit of a rhythm to them, a mood of sorts, and I am hoping to capture that here.

This week's guest curator is Lori Andrews, aka The 10 Cent Designer, via Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and I couldn't be more excited to share her faves with you. Lori is has an amazing eye and is one my all time favorite flickrettes! She's also written an amazing flash poem to accompany her collection of flickr faves. Take a look at this inspiring set. The Last Summer.

Flickr Curator: Jinnie Lee.

Today's Flickr Curator is one of my favorite Polaroid wizards, Jinnie Lee of Lilac Moon Studios. I first discovered Jinnie on flickr, and then she graciously agreed to share her home with us here on sfgirlbybay's Unexpected Guests. Jinnie's photography work is elegant and so lovely and she has a wonderful eye for what is just simply sublime. Here's what Jinnie had to say about her lovely flickr favorites: "These are my favorites among favorites. It was not easy to narrow them down! Arranging this set made me realize that I'm most attracted to pictures with simple compositions and soft light.. pictures with a little element of sweetness. These are the same qualities that I strive to achieve in my own Polaroid photography but boy, do these folks make it look easy! Oh, and I love dogs, especially Boston terriers, if you couldn't tell. Polaroid + dogs are even better. :)"

This week's Flickr Curator is one of my favorite artists, Sandra Juto, or perhaps you may know her as Smosch. Sandra is based in Gothenburg, Sweden and loves images and yarn. You can see her beautiful and unique artwork, and her Smosch softies in her shop, as well as in her online portfolio. I find Sandra so incredibly talented and am really honored to share her flickr faves with you.

I asked Sandra why she believes she selected these particular photographs as favorites: "My favorites are always images that put a smile on my face when seeing them for the first time. Many of my recent favorites are pictures of some work I've done because I'm so happy and grateful to see them all over the world."

Flickr Curator: Diana Fayt.

Today's Flickr Curator is the amazing ceramist Diana Fayt. Diana's ceramics are so lovely and inspiring, and her flickr faves selections today are just as amazing as her designs. Knowing Diana's beautiful work, I can see why she might be inspired by the flickr images below. I think you'll fall in love, and also see the creative connection with her selections below.

Diana explains her beautiful collection of images: "I tend to favorite images I like on first impulse and really don't think too much about why I like something. It was interesting to look through my collection of favorites and see that there were three running themes that dictated my choices. Drawings and images in red and black, portraits of people, and funny or cute animal pictures. I decided on sharing some of my favorite red and black drawings with you all. I have always loved drawings and line (it's the frustrated illustrator in me). Thick, thin, squiggly, straight, bold, subtle...A line can communicate so much in the way it's drawn and I really think it reveals a lot about the Artist. And for the red, well I haven't figured out what it is with me and red, I just love it...to the point that it makes my heart skip a beat when I see it."

Guest Curator @ The Beholder.

I was quite honored and extremely humbled to be invited by Suzanne Shade of The Beholder online art gallery to be their Guest Curator this month. Flickr Curator: Orangette.

This week's Flickr Curator is Molly of the beautiful Seattle-based food blog Orangette. Molly was surprised to notice how much light, water, and open space there was to be found in her current collection of favorite images, and I would have to agree - what a lovely set! If you've never checked out Orangette before, it's full of gorgeous food photography and some amazing recipes, as well. It makes me hungry just looking at it!

Here's what Molly had to say about her inspiring selections: "It's so interesting for me to look at these images as a group, because when I chose them as favorites, each choice was made separately, in isolation, without a lot of serious thought. Of course, now that I see them this way, I can't get over how much they have in common. The first thing I notice is the light. Loads and loads of it. Apparently, I've been sort of obsessed with light lately - and, to a lesser degree, with water. I had never put a name to it that way, but it makes sense. I don't think anything moves me as much as light does. Beautiful light, especially in the late afternoon, makes me almost unreasonably happy. It kind of makes my heart hurt, as though it were too big for my chest. In fact, that's why I started shooting with a film camera a few months ago: because I love the way film responds to light. The photographs that inspire me are, most often, the ones that capture a certain glow, a cast of light that I wish I could carry around with me all the time."

Flickr Curator: Susannah Conway.

This week's Flickr Curator is UK-based photographer Susannah Conway, who lives in the historic and very picturesque city of Bath in south-west England. You may have seen Susannah's lovely work around the web: she currently shares a weekly Polaroid collaboration with another favorite photographer of mine Alicia Bock, called Favorite Things. Susannah also runs a couple of wonderful blogs, including Ink on My Fingers, and teaches the online photography e-course on her other beautiful blog, Unravelling, as well as running an etsy shop where you can find her lovely photographic prints. With all this in her favor, I just knew she'd curate an amazing set of flickr favorites.

Here's what Susannah shared about about her favorite flickr photos: "Looking at this collection of my Flickr favourites I realise how much I want it to be spring here in the UK. I look out my window and see a blanket of grey cloud covering the city, but in my head - and my computer screen - I am dreaming of blue skies, golden sunshine and windows flung open to let the warm breeze inside. I'm dreaming of picnics and flower picking and paddling in the sea; I want to tie my hair back in a ponytail and wear dresses that swish around my legs as I sashay down the street. These photos could be snapshots from my memory banks, of the days I hope to recreate sometime soon. My favourites always transport me to another, often better, place in my mind."

I've been a bit remiss lately about posting my Flickr Curator series, so I felt like posting one of my own today! I love all of these images - flickr has such an amazing pool of talented photographers and they never cease to amaze me with wonderment and awe. Flickr Curator: Shades of Mediocrity.

Today's very moving collection of flickr favorites is curated by one of my personal favorite flickr photographers, Shades of Mediocrity, aka Ky from Los Angeles. I have deep admiration for Ky, an amazing photographer by night, and an educator by day. I aim for the day I can shoot a photograph just within a vague realm of one of her lovely images. Here's a look at Ky's beautiful collection of inspired flickr favorites. I am so honored to share what moves Ky. Ky explains her beautiful collection of favorites: "A friend recently asked me, "Why do you like the photos you've shown?" (he has made an art form of probing questions and subsequent discovery), and my response was purely "for many of them, it was the sense of self I noticed within them......a lost self... meandering." When I look at them as a whole, I feel as if I am in a maze, navigating my way through, bumping into icebergs, looking for those shivering fragments that make us who we are. Along the way I find a part of myself, a reminder that we are all a part of this collective experience. It is equal parts reassuring and humbling."

Happy Berkeley Day*.

In case you weren't in Berkeley Saturday night, and you were unable to come to the opening reception at Relish at Home, I thought I'd share a few photos of the party. It was really lovely, and full of fun people - some familiar, and some new - so it was nice to see and meet y'all. It was nice to finally meet both Kelly, Relish At Home owner and curator, and Jill Bliss the featured artist of the evening. I apologize in advance - these photos could have been better, butI think I was socializing more than working. You'll have to visit the Relish at Home boutique to see what I mean!

The shop looked really great - fun aqua walls with lots of nice wood to offset the
soothing blue color. And shelves stocked with the best handcrafted goods -
I could have spent a bloody fortune, but escaped with just a few pretty trinkets.

Here's hostess Kelly and some of the stationary the shop carries from all
of the it girls. Some woodland-themed sticky notes from Sukie; Nantaka Joy
notebooks from Joy at Oh Joy! with really cute with scalloped edges; some
pretty new journals from Lotta Jansdotter; and of course, wonderful
pieces from Jill's new Tides and Trees collection.

Jill explained to me a little bit about how she came about drawing botanicals.
She knew all these gorgeous plants by sight, but in order to try and memorize their
names, she started sketching them. Jill says she still can't remember all the names,
but the outcome of her 'research' is just fantastic. I've got to go back and select one
of her little mini prints - they were about 3" x 2" or maybe smaller, and drawn
on grid paper (again, my photos are not doing them proper justice!).

*Happy Berkeley Day is a rare occurrence that happens only, and entirely randomly. Actually it's just a reference to a funny moment from the evening that I felt compelled to add. :)

Flickr Curator: Yours Truly.

I don't have a curated flickr set from anyone this week, and gosh knows I love flickering about myself, so I curated my own set of favorites. When I look at these images, I find a sense of peace, creative inspiration, and a reminder to keep my camera close at my side at all times. You never know what you might capture, from the random sublime, to an intimate moment, to a candid portrait, or perhaps a gentle still life. A goal of mine for 2009 is to improve my photography tenfold, so these images also guide and inspire me to try my very best to get there. Thanks to the many of you who thrill me, and ignite my photographic passion every day. I've barely touched the surface here, and there are just so many others I could share, and thank. If I have to have an addiction, I'm feeling pretty good about it being flickr.

Paper your walls.

One of my favorite resources for inexpensive, yet wonderful and unique artwork is The Beholder. And curator, creator Suzanne Shade has some brand new artists in her quarry of talent. No time like the present (2007!) to start investing in your own personal art collection. Who needs to drop another senseless hundred bucks at Targét (you know this happens, when you only went in for the super size shampoo). I really love this photography by Paul Paper. Paul lives and works in Lithuania, and has been shooting since the age of 17. He has been exhibited in France and Sweden, and published by Frankie and This is a Magazine in Australia and Italy. Paul shoots spontaneously, capturing what he calls "the tiny tiny miracle in boring every day." His transition from recreational to professional came gradually, and thanks to collectives like Young Photographer's United in Belgium, is getting worldwide exposure.
